Bergman - Rorick Residence
The stately 1905 Capitol Hill home needed a new kitchen to provide more work and leisure space for the large family and many friends. The low ceilings and some left-over walls were a result of the kitchen/family room having been combined from several smaller rooms. The back yard dropped off from the main floor and was not used much. The owners wanted to be able to utilize the backyard for entertaining and landscape it for beauty and privacy.

We devised an elaborate structural beam system to raise the ceilings in keeping with the rest of the house. I added a bump-out with double French doors to connect the kitchen and dining area to the garden, and designed a bluestone patio on top of a 2 foot soil fill to get it closer in elevation to the main floor.

The kitchen was designed to be very functional, with room for more than one cook and to be modern in function and transitional in appearance. The island is used as buffet for parties and a place to do homework and keep the cook company. The family room, kitchen and courtyard has become a vibrant and sun-filled central space for daily life and entertaining.
