Duncan Residence
The beautifully remodeled home in the Montlake neighborhood was missing a good connection to the street. A narrow staircase from the street led to a similarly narrow staircase for the small porch. A new window from the remodeled basement looked out unto a mound of dirt while the roof of a concrete structure leading from the garage to the basement, stuck out of the ground. The task was to find a way of creating street appeal for the house and a graceful connection between the sidewalk and the front door on a very steep site.

I designed a small patio to serve as an intermediate connection between a new front porch and the new curved stairs to the street. The concrete pad was concealed with a raised planting bed. We installed a rockery to allow for planting and I designed a new mahogany front door with leaded glass and a custom metal rail around the porch. Many skilled artisans and the owner’s artistic sensibilities contributed to the final result.
