Harris Residence
The Capitol Hill house was very nice with the exception of a few areas. The front porch was about to collapse and the kitchen was a dark crammed space, in part due to the four doors into the room, including the basement access door and in part to a lack of windows.
The basement access was moved to a hallway which gave us a good corner for the main cooking and prep area. An existing bump out with only a tiny window was transformed into a small dining space with a bay window and a great view out into the new Japanese garden. Josephine Harris is a ceramic artist and we incorporated a shelf around the kitchen to hold part of her collection of pottery. The kitchen has become a sunny and delightful space in a style that harmonizes with the early century Dutch colonial house.
