Vedel Residence
The existing kitchen was in need of a significant update. The space was dark and uninviting and difficult to work in for more than one person. A large hood and island blocked the view and access to the dining table, and the style of the existing cabinets seemed out of place in the modern home. The owners wanted more counter space and an area for their children and guests to sit while entertaining the cook. With the existing solid brick structure the new kitchen had to be designed within the confines of existing windows, walls and ceiling. All cabinets were removed and the brick walls stuccoed and painted a lighter color which in addition with new skylights and light fixtures makes the space bright and inviting. The cabinet lay-out was changed to add more counter space and 3 task related working areas. Tall units were pushed to the back wall to open up the view into the space and make it seem wider, and the hood and stove was moved to a new peninsula that also provides a sitting space. The new cabinets build by a Danish cabinet company matches the modern feel of the home. |
